A family-run nursery specialising in alpines, choice bulbs and dwarf perennials is celebrating its 25th year at Malvern Spring Festival in 2016. Border Alpines, now based in North Devon but formerly of Shropshire, is a former winner of the RHS Farrer Trophy at the show and has won numerous awards at other RHS flower shows. To celebrate its 25th Malvern show anniversary, owners Jan and Carl Lowe will be presenting their 25th customer on each day of the show with a special gift to say thank you.
Speaking about the nursery’s special relationship with the show, Jan said:
“We have been growing and selling plants for over 35 years now and when our children were younger, and on hand to help us, we used to exhibit at all the major flower shows. They are all pursuing their own careers now and have families of their own, but we all still come together for Malvern Spring Festival every year – the best flower show there is in our opinion! Some of our Malvern customers have bought plants from us every show for the past 25 years and we’re looking forward to seeing them again next week.”
Carl has loved plants from an early age and has particularly loved breeding new plants to introduce to market, often named after members of the family. The latest of these is a hardy geranium, Geranium cinereum ‘Melody’, named for his love of music and launched at Malvern Spring Festival in 2014 to much fanfare from Carol Klein. He says:
“There’s something quite special about nurturing a seedling, waiting for it to flower and then discovering a new colour break. We have had several over the years but ‘Melody’ was really exciting as it is as close to red as we’ve achieved to date, a colour very unusual for the type of geraniums we grow. It’s proved both strong and attractive, a perfect combination, and will no doubt be popular at the show again this year.”
Three generations will be on hand to help serve customers on the Border Alpines stand throughout the show, 13 family members in all, the youngest of which is just 3. Sophie, aged 9, is Jan and Carl’s eldest grandchild and has a hardy geranium named after her. She is looking forward to helping on the stand on Sunday 8 May and says:
“We all love helping Oma and Grandad on the stand at Malvern and I especially like serving customers who choose to buy a Geranium cinereum ‘Sophie’. I’ll be counting carefully on Sunday this year to make sure we give the 25th customer their special gift!”
Border Alpines plants are all grown in the South West of England and the nursery will have over 200 varieties for sale at the show. All customers receive 10% off any selection of 10 or more mixed plants. Find Border Alpines on Stand 2055 in the Plant Pavillions at the show or buy anytime online at www.borderalpines.co.uk. About Border Alpines
Border Alpines is a family-run specialist plant nursery situated in North Devon (South West England) although it started life in Shropshire before we made the move south in 2005 to warmer climes and less annual rainfall. The rural inland situation suits us – sheltered from the prevailing winds but close enough to the coast to be able to enjoy the Atlantic breakers year round.
We specialise in alpines, small perennials and herbaceous plants. We are breeders of hardy geraniums and have a passion for finding new strains and cultivars to bring to market. Most of our plants are grown here on the nursery and all are grown in the UK. You will find our patented plants in garden centres throughout the UK and Europe.
We first ran a mail order service in the 1980s, back when the printed catalogue was king and payment was by cheque or postal order! Customer feedback was always lovely and we enjoyed the thought of our plants whizzing off to new homes. But it was time consuming and with an establishing business and three young children, we found it impossible to keep up.
With the help of our now grown children and the power of modern technology, we are thrilled to have brought back the option of mail order for customers. But if you are not able to order online or prefer to order the traditional way, we have a fully descriptive colour catalogue available for £3. We accept payment by cheque with an order form or via PayPal.
